Welcome to mariorimatiphotojournalism

At mariorimatiphotojournalism I specialize in capturing the essence of every moment.  From the solemnity of Vatican events to the vibrant energy of concerts I believe that my photography garners the spirit of Rome.

 About me

I was born and raised in Canada (I lived there for 30 years).  I’m presently working as a photojournalist for Splash News/Shutterstock/Getty Images.  I’ve been living in Italy since 1989.

I first came to Italy on vacation in 1966 and I then  moved permanently to Rome in 1989 for two reasons: one was a job at the U.S. Embassy (I was “Trade Marketing Specialist”) and the other one was because right around the corner there was going to be the 1990 FIFA World Cup, so I couldn’t absolutely miss that great sporting event.  I not  only took in the World Cup but I was also present at the opening match in Milan between Maradona’s Argentina and Milla’s Cameroon; matches in Udine; the semi-final match between Italy and Argentina in Naples on July 3rd  and also the West Germany-Argentina final in Rome) but I also worked as Korea’s interpreter in the small and quaint town of Udine.

I’m fluent in English, Spanish, French and I’ve been studying to years Russian.  I have a BA in Spanish and French literature from the University of Manitoba, an MA in Hispanic Studies from  Queen’s University, Canada as well as an Msc. in the sociology of sports and sports management from the University of Leicester, UK.   I’m also a qualified UEFA “B” license coach with ten courses under my belt.

The book "Silent Cities"?  It contains 15 major international cities during the terrible April, 2020 world lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  The book is 365 pages long and the only Italian city is Rome, which I went out to photograph 13 times (and a big "grazie" to both Jeffrey and Julie Loria for having given me the opportunity to work on such a unique project!).

And the letter here below?  We had hand-delivered a copy of the book to the Quirinale Presidential Palace in Rome and for the kind attention of Italy's president, Sergio Mattarella.  Unlike someone across the Atlantic, President Mattarella, like him or not, from practically day 1 of the pandemic he wore a mask and was in his own way a symbol and a "guiding light" for millions of Italians, and no doubt also those live abroad.

As far as concert photography is concerned since my very first live show in April, 1976 at the old Winnipeg Arena with Kiss and during "Kissmania" (and with the original band too!) I'm now up to 516 concerts, that is concerts that I've seen/photographed in Canada, Italy, Austria, Germany and Sweden and in approximately 68 different cities and towns.

And I picked up a camera the very first time when is was about 4 years old, at least it was the first time I had ever seen something called a "camera".  Some 11 years later in 1974 I actually started using a camera, that old and great Pentax K-1000 (and no, unlike many of my colleagues I DON'T use Photoshop)!

Benvenuti a mariorimatiphotojournalism

Services

I cover ALL kinds of events, from Pope Francis to Italy's President Sergio Mattarella to our Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to art exhibits, sporting events and LOTS of concerts (515 of them so far in 5 different countries and in 68 cities and towns).

And I don't just take pictures but I write-up on the events in English and for an international audience (I first started photography in Winnipeg; Canada--I was born there--in 1974).  I can also do walk-about photo tours of the Eternal City (I've got about 120 books on Rome so I think I know it rather well, especially after nearly 36 years that I've been living in the Eternal City).  I can be reached at the following email address for further information:  rimati59@gmail.com
